Threading hair removal

Threading is a form of epilation (hair removal) that has been around for thousands of years, it origincally started in the East but has been proved very popular in the West too as many people see cheaper and alternative methods for hair removal.

Countries that use threading for hair removal?
Turkey, Egypt, Iran, India and Pakistan are just a few of the countries that have used threading as an ancient art to remove hair from the face. Threading the entire face is also very common in many Eastern countries but was origianlly done when a woman was getting married or on special occasions, some countries see threading as a coming of age tradition showing that a girl has now become a woman. Nowadays all countries have salons that offer threading as a form of hair removal.

What is threading?
Beauticians use a pure cotton thread (usually white) twist it and roll it along the areas that need the hair to be removed. Unlike using tweezers to pluck out hairs individually threading allows you to remove many hairs at once creating neater and straighter lines. Threading is an excellent way to shape and remove hair from eyebrows, you can create a very nice clean and dramatic brow as well as traditional brow shapes. When done properly it doesn't hurt as much as you think, I have had it done professionally and hardly felt a thing and I have very coarse hair!

Where can you thread?
Threading is usually done on the face but you could use it on other parts of the body too, threading is ideal for removing hair on small parts of the body so it really isn't recommended for the entire body, it could take you all day! Personally I thread my eyebrows, hairline, upper lip, and side burns, it doesn't take me long at all. I have been using this method for 10 years now and love it so much I teach my friends how to do it too.

How to thread?

  • It is very important that you have thin cotton thread, using polyester or other synthetic thread will make threading more painful.
  • Take a long piece, usually from the tip of your longest finger to your elbow, then join the ends and tie it into a knot.
  • Put your hands inside and twist it, now you can thread left to right or right to left.

If that is too difficult for you, you can buy a tool that threads it for you making it easier to use, see picture below.
If you are unsure if this method is right for you try having it done first professionally to see if you like it, then you can try and do it at home. Some places charge really ridiculous prices too but you can get tools like the one above for a few pounds and do it at home in ease.

*A little tip, like all methods of hair removal it can leave you with a little redness and raised bumps, I apply a little aloe vera gel to soothe it and reduce redness.
