Cut your own hair at home - The Ponytail Haircut

Since I was a child I have always been to a hairdresser for all haircuts, from a trim to a whole new look, I have never hesitated to part with my money. As I got older I realised the importance of a good hairdresser that does exactly as you say, gives good advice and is honest about whether a new cut would suit you or not. I have been lucky enough to never have had a bad haircut but I have paid as little as £7 for a simple dry cut to over £75 for a wash, cut and blow dry (my hair was very long, down to my bottom).

Every time I have moved to a new area I have dreaded finding a new hairdresser that did as I asked, but I did find one eventually. So now I have moved yet again and have found myself in the same situation. I have found that all the women in my area have the same look, same haircut and I hate that! Why do people have to follow so called 'trends' and celebrities? I enjoy having my haircut and coming home to watch everyone's reaction to my new 'do'. Well after weeks of searching I decided to do it myself.

After watching numerous videos on how to cut hair at home, I found an amazing video showing how you can cut your own hair effortlessly at home in less than 30 minutes (5 minutes with a little practice) I decided to give it a go. I must mention that my hair grows really fast and is poker straight plus I don't use conditioner because then even a hair band will easily slide out. Well I have shoulder length hair with loads of layers and wanted a side fringe and my layers trimmed. I decided to tackle my hair first then my fringe/bangs.

Make sure your hair is as straight as it can be, if its a little wavy then blow dry or straighten it first, it will make a huge difference.
Ensure hair is knot free, then brush all the hair to the crown
Gather all the hair and tie with a hair band, it should sit close to the crown with the hair band resting on your forehead.
If you want short hair then cut close to the hair band if not place another hair band close to the ends of the hair and cut between.
The further away you cut from your crown the longer the layers will be.
Remember to point the scissors upwards and cut into the hair so its not too blunt, this is a very important step that can make the difference of a good hair cut and a bad one.

The image below is of a journalist who decided to give it a go, as you can see it is a little dull, strangely mine turned out better that this! My layers are more defined and I have a side fringe, I also cut lower down from the hair band as I needed to trim the layers I already had. to be honest with you this haircut should only be done if you already have layers as a complete new look may shock you.

I will put up my own pictures soon, so if you have any questions in the meantime then please leave a comment.
