How to cut girl/toddlers hair?

As your child gets older its advisable to give their hair a little trim every now and again regardless if its a boy or girl. All my nephews have had their hair trimmed since they were very small, they ended up with very uniform and healthy hair. My daughter has been having her hair trimmed every month since she was one years old, her hair grows very quick! If I was to leave her hair she wouldn't be able to see, as well as trimming the front (fringe) I also do the sides and the back every now and again but not monthly as I do her fringe.

I have a niece who is pretty much the same age as my daughter and her mum has never trimmed her hair, as a result of this her hair is very limp, lifeless and sparse. As you know some people's hair grow at different rates so its not always even so trimming a child's hair regularly will mean a nicer head of hair. As you know trimming hair regularly means healthier hair as the hair further to the top at the roots are newer and towards the tip the oldest, so trimming off the older parts at the tip can revive hair.

Thankfully when I need to brush, come or style my little ones hair she isn't wriggly but there are days when she will not sit still, obviously that's normal she's too little to understand.

Method 1 - take hair that you want to trim and point cut, so instead of cutting across and getting a sharp blunt cut, pointing the scissors up to cut means a subtle cut and less prone to cutting off too much or looking fake.

Method 2 - like the ponytail haircut section the front, sides and back into four ponytails and trim off the ends.

Personally I prefer method 2, it easier and less messy! Then again my little one understands the drill and will sit there patiently, I know that other children will not. Also over time she has become accustomed to it so I no longer need to use hair bands to make four ponytails, using my experience I can tell how much and where to snip off.

Never cut straight across and never rest your scissors on the forehead to cut a fringe or trim its extremely dangerous to expect a child to just sit there and let you cut their hair with sharp scissors, my niece moved when her mum did it and nearly lost an eye!

I am in no way a stylist, just a mother who has found a way that works for me, although I have a little girl both methods will work for a boy too as they usually have shorter hair than girls. Also method 2 can still be used on cutting girls hair as they grow, I use a similar method and have a straight cut using the ponytail method of cutting hair.

Have you tried it? Do you have another method, improvements, suggestions? Let me know by leaving a comment below.
