Travelling alone with a young child

I recently had to do a long haul flight with just me and my 18 month old, since she has flown long haul before with no problems I knew the flight itself would be fine, I was more worried about navigating through the airport and handling all my luggage after a 12 hour flight. I see many people at the airport with special assistance but failed to really find any more information regarding this, so here's my experience.
